DeWalt 18v nano battery June 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very disappointed. Does not hold a charge any longer than an XRP battery and at a much higher price.
very satisfied March 22, 2008 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I'm a sheet metal worker, (tin knocker)if you will and I've got no regrets about this batteries. Yeah it doesn't match the shape at the bottom of the old batteries but it is lighter an actually last me longer than my old ones . Now if how it looks is what worries you and not how it works, then maybe this isn't for you. Lets face it , is a tool not fashion... I personally bought the impact driver cause my job requires a lot of screwing of sheet metal screws on 24 to 18 gauge steel and these batteries last me about four days without the need for another charge...compare that to maybe two full days with the regular ones, that's a long time if you count that we hold almost everything with screws... so we screw all day basically and, yeah, the don't warn you when they are about to "die" but that is a good thing cause you always work with the full power of the tool or no power at all. I know I killed an old battery just trying to get the last little juice off of it and when I tried to charge it again, it wouldn't. So this feature actually doesn't let me burn it to death. It works with all my 18v tools; my recip. saw, my spot light, my fluorescent light, my hammer drill driver, my jigsaw, and my double cut shears... hope this helps in your decision...
DeWalt 18V Nano Battery January 8, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
The batteries are compatible in all the older DeWalt 18V devices I tried (DC988, DC925, an old unknown model two-speed DeWalt hammer drill, and a DW919 work light). They seem to hold the charge for several months with little loss in power.
However, they give no warning that they are at the end of a useful charge cycle. In a DC927 drill one pack worked fine that week. When I went to use it with the same battery the following week it wouldn't turn or even make the bulb in a DW919 work light glow. The other pack was OK. I recharged the low battery and it was then OK.
The protection circuitry must shut them off under load below a certain voltage to protect them from a potentially damaging total discharge. The discharged packs will measure ~14V DC but will not run the drill or make the bulb in a DW919 glow. A freshly charged pack measures ~21V. A call to DeWalt tech support confirmed this behavior.
Compatibility to current 18V NiCad Tools November 8, 2007 15 out of 26 found this review helpful
I cannot give this a rating on performance as I have not tested the battery on a project. However, I will give this new Nano battery a resounding ZERO stars on fit with the existing 18V NiCad line. Although it does plug in, it does not even remotely match the body lines of the battery interface.
The new battery is shorter in length than the XRP. This means the edge of the tool body sticks out past the body of the nano, both front and rear. I undestand that they are doing this to not only make a smaller tool, but to annoy current owners enough to buy the new tool. But, owning many of the current desings, I don't see that happeing any time soon.
This is one place were Milwaukee has beaten Dewalt. Their 18V Lithium matches the body lines of their current 18V NiCad series. Now do I plan to switch to Milwaukee, no. But, at the same time I will not be buying any Dewalt Nanos until all my NiCads are dead and no new NiCads can be purchased or unless they come out with a Nano that matches the XRP footprint.
Plus the price is way out of range compared to the other top manufactures.
