5 out of 5 stars Great deal   May 26, 2008
Arrived on time with a bag of goodies, I am very satisfied and keep finding new uses for the tools. Found the reciprocating saw perfect for ridding my property of thorned wild trees, without eating my arms.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe for a homeowner   May 24, 2008
Was given this set to use when I was driving a service truck. They are very lightweight, but not powerful enough for hard use. I think it's about comparable to 12 and 14.4 volt tools from higher end companies like Dewalt, Milwaukee, Bosch, Panasonic, Makita and even Ridgid. Batteries do not hold a charge for long, did not like the cold and needed replacement within the first year - and yes I know how to use and charge Ni-Cad batteries. I have NOT had any of the same issues with my Milwaukee, Bosch, Dewalt or Ridgid tools.

If price is the only factor, sure I think this set might outperform Black and Decker, Skil and other such brands, but if you really want power and utility - stay away.

3 out of 5 stars Not worth the reduced price   May 10, 2008
In a nutshell, I'd say that you should save your money and buy from a better brand, such as Ridgid. Their products are fantastic.

Over the years, I've had many ryobi products. Until this day, the reciprocating saw works great for me and I abuse it pretty good. Unfortunately, that seems to be the only product I've bought from them that has stood up.

The circular saw only has a 5 1/2 inch blade and is really only powerful enough to go through plywood. After a year or so, don't even expect it to do that. I bought it brand new to help build my tool shed. It was able to go through 2x4s with straight cuts. 2x4 miter or bevel cuts? Forget about it, you're asking for too much! It would get stuck about 3/4 of the way done. 2x6s? Eh, sometimes it would make it all the way through if it felt like it, sometimes it would get stuck. What I would do is start the blade up and get it up to full speed, then quickly try and make the cut. Powering these devices seems to be a recurring problem with Ryobi products.

I bought these pieces separately and never used the drill, so I can't comment on it. However, I've had many other ryobi products, including an 18v sheet rock saw. Again, the best way to sum things up is that the only one that I have that still works is the reciprocating saw.

You look at the initial price and think, "Wow, great deal." However, I'd recommend that you spend a little more money and get products from Ridgid. You can get them on ebay for substantially lower than you would any retail outlet.

3 out of 5 stars Great for first home tool kit.   February 28, 2008
I purchased this kit approximately a year ago from the Home Depot new, but the kit comes with all of the same tools, and thus this review will concentrate on the tools themselves and how they perform.

The Ryobi One+ system is very extensive, although, many other brands are equally extensive as well. With Ryobi, you are not necessarily buying high quality tools, but you are buying tools that will work for the next 4 or so years depending on how heavily they are used.

The One+ system has one advantage over all other systems. They are among the most affordable cordless tool systems on the market, and if you are looking to purchase your first set of brand new tools on a tight budget, these should be the tools you look at.

Drill:

The Drill is the most versatile tool in this kit, and will likely receive the most use. It is fairly conservative on power working for a couple of hours before it needs a recharge. The clutch functions well, thus preventing you from stripping screws. The drill also allows you to switch between drilling and fastening functions by altering the speed at which the motor turns the bit. The drill does suffer from being underpowered.

Light:

Works as well as any other work light. It has a limited rotatable head that allows you to direct light to the floor or at the ceiling. Good for directed lighting purposes, but wont light an area larger than 4' x 4'.

Vacuum:

Used it only once, then went a got a small shop-vac to carry around with me. It is underpowered, and has too small of an holding area for debris requiring constant emptying.

Saw-Saw

An excellent tool capable of powering through solid oak doors, drywall, wood, just about anything. Battery life is decent - I was able to take down my kitchen ceiling using this tool on one charge. Has an easy blade locking system that allows quick change out of blades as necessary.

Radial Saw

An underpowered battery hog that is best left on the shelf. It can only be used for approximately 1-2 minutes before it begins to lose power, and by 3 minutes, the saw is completely dead. My first couple of experiences with this saw led me to purchase a corded radial saw instead. That being said, this saw will work well for rapid cross-cutting applications.

4 out of 5 stars Great Deal for the $$   December 11, 2007
I ordered this set for my son-in-law and he is tickled pink. My husband is a contractor and a DeWalt freak and he seemed to think this was a really nice set for the money and for normal homeowner use. The first shipment had a broken piece on the dust-buster and Cummins graciously sent me a new kit. I have returned the old one and barring any difficulty in crediting my credit card, I'll say the customer service was great.
