Amazon.com Review No workshop or tool box is complete without at least one dependable and powerful cordless drill/driver. Skil's 2587-05, 3/8-inch keyless chuck drill/driver has a two-speed gear box that allows the user to shift from high speed drilling to high torque for driving screws or bolts. The gear change lever is located on top of the tool housing above the two-finger variable speed trigger. The forward/reverse switch on this drill is located just above the trigger so that you can switch direction without changing your grip, and there is a forward/reverse indicator light on top of the housing. There is a built-in bit storage compartment on top of the housing. Especially handy is the built-in bit index No more guessing at which bit is needed for which screw. Simply place a screw in the index and you'll find the bit size you will need. The drill/driver is powered by a 14.4-volt Ni-Cad battery which gives the user superior power and extended battery life. The battery slides easily onto the bottom of the tool giving the drill/driver optimum balance. Included with the 2587-05 is an extra battery, a one-hour charger and carrying case. --C. Dwight Barnett

Great powertool at an awesome price July 31, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This Skil Drill/Driver set is very powerful and feels very solid in your hands when you are using it. The battery packs a good amount of power which goes the distance during many projects. Having an extra battery is an added bonus just in case you procrastinate and don't get the job done right away or are easily distracted.
Great Drill...........Inexpensive September 7, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this drill for my husband and he has yet to have any complaints and has used it for several projects since he got it a couple weeks ago.
IF YOU ARE A HANDYWOMAN. . . October 5, 2004 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a great buy for me because I am a new home owner and need to get projects done around the house. I knew the 18 volt battery would be too heavy. I considered the 12 volt battery but Consumer Reports rated all the 12 v brands/models as average. The 14 volt is just right because I don't sacrifice power to get a project done faster. It is a little heavy and my slender arm did get tired after 1/2 hour of drilling but by then I was completely done anyways! So, model 2587 has accurate drilling, cordless freedom and better priced than competitive brands that rated as GOOD from Consumer Reports. Sweet deal and investment. I'm sure that the battery life will improve a lot after a few recharges, just like the owner manual says. As a woman, I am more confident about doing a great job on "assembly required projects"!
Good drill for the price September 8, 2004 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
After searching for a cordless drill, I decided to rely on Consumer Reports review of the Skil 14.4v drill. Although I was unimpressed by the battery life upon first testing the drill, I found the life to improve after a few charges, which I later read in the manual is typical for the first 3-4 charges to be weak. Apparently this is part of the battery design to extend the battery's life. Overall this is a great product for the money with good standard accessories (e.g. bit storage and index and one hour charger).
Awesome Power June 27, 2004 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The guy with the gear problem had it out of gear... it happened to me twice... not quite in gear the chuck wont spin. Smart people know to check. This is an awesome drill... powerfull and tough. I bought mine 3 years ago and while the batteries needed to be replaced recently, it is still serving me well. I am a Plumber and I use it to drill large holes in stainless steel... speed is not that much of an issue for that but torque is king for cranking large bits. I have used a grinder to make 1/2" bits fit into this drill and it will drill holes in quality stainless steel for hours. I have used it to grind and wire-brush my front railings... speed is a key factor for that... it stands up to that challenge as well. It has been dropped many times but it does not care... I could not live without it... if I ever need to replace it (which it seems I will not any time soon) I will get another one just like it. If you are thinking about getting one... stop thinking... get it... you will thank yourself. This drill out performs most drills of twice the cost
