Most manufacturers seem to be using lithium-ion battery technology to create lighter versions of existing cordless tools, or high-voltage tools that would have been too heavy for use with older battery technologies. Bosch however, seems to have also used the opportunities presented by lithium ion to dream up tools that have never even existed. Last year, they scored big hits with the PS-20 Pocket Driver and I-driver, which redefined ideas about drills and screwdrivers at the same time.

This year, they've extended that out-of-the-box thinking to impact drivers, with the Litheon "Impactor", and it is another jaw-dropper.

Impact drivers are smaller and lighter than cordless drills, but because they have a simple hammering function and are geared specifically to spin fast, they produce about three times the torque of a drill. This means an impact driver will put in screws, bolts, and other fasteners much faster than a drill would (especially in sheet metal). They can drill holes, too. What they won't do is drill holes bigger than 1/2 inch, but they'll handle just about any job a homeowner or contractor would do around the house.

In size and feel, the Impactor is very much like the Pocket Driver. It's small and light enough to fit into a drawer. Hitched to your belt, you could carry it around all day and barely notice the weight, although it looks so cool, you're definitely going to want to keep taking it out. With the three LED lights on the front, Bosch has not only made sure this thing doubles practically as a spare flashlight, they've really solidified the space-age ray gun look, making the Impactor pretty hard not to pull it out just to play with. With the hammer action on top of the respectable 10.8 volts of power however, this can do even more than the Pocket Driver could. We used it to drive screws through sheet metal and 3/8-inch bolts into pine. It wasn't as fast as 14.4- or 18-volt models, but it got the job done well enough to make this a truly all-purpose tool

The lithium ion batteries also have the advantage of staying charged when they are not used, which makes them great for tools that get left in drawers for long periods of time between uses. --Tod Harrick

It delivers 60% more torque than an 18-volt drill/driver, but at 6-inches tall by 6-1/2-inches long and 2.2 lbs, it is less than half the size of an 18-volt NiCad impact driver. A high-performance Bosch motor and all-metal gears produce 1,800 RPM and 3,000 BPM and turn the powerful hammer and anvil system to deliver 800 in-lbs. of torque. For a full range of professional fastening applications, including self-tapping screws, nuts and bolts, lag bolts up to 5/16-inches and more, the PS40-2 is sized to fit in any tool belt pouch or pocket and be productive all day long.

Loaded with Features
A bright 3-LED work light specially positioned in the nose of the tool effectively illuminates any work area. A hex quick-change chuck allows for instant changes from drill to driver bits. A sensitive variable speed trigger offers optimal control over speed for varying applications, while the tool's superior ergonomic design, which includes soft-grip, adds to user comfort over long periods of time.

Bosch PROVANTAGE Warranty

4 out of 5 stars Great little tool!   July 3, 2008
O.K., this thing is not an industrial strength monster. But for a very small, comfortable, rechargeable driver I think it's great. I'm installing hardwood throughout and needed something to screw down the underlayment. At this point I've driven about a jillion 1 1/2" screws, and I'm happy with it. The batteries recharge quickly, so by the time I've expended one the other is ready to go. I'm taking one star off because it is fairly noisy; ear protection recommended if you're working on a big job.

4 out of 5 stars Great small package   June 26, 2008
This product is all it claims to be and more.
It has replaced my 12V and 14V drills. I use it to put together all my woodworking projects at this time. I also have the sister to this one and together they make an unbeatable pair.

5 out of 5 stars Bosch PS40-2 review   June 23, 2008
Product works great. Only has a 1/4" hex quick change chuck which does not take any 3/8" items, watch this in add-on sets. I compare this to an older Bosch 3670 1/2" hammer drill which is more than 4 pounds heavier.
Both can drive 4" deck screws beyond flush but the older drill would need square drive screw heads to avoid stripping the head. The impactor can drive philips head screws without stripping. It runs up the screw at almost 1800 rpm until resistance is met, then starts with impactor action. If you continue to push past flush, it can effectively countersink the screw. While not designed as a drill, it can be used as one as long as you have a light touch and clear the hole frequently which is good when you are up on a ladder and don't want to go back to get a drill. The impactor action also does not wrench out of your hand when resistance is met by the fastner as it would with a drill/driver. Only downside is how much noise an impactor makes once it kicks in, but as has been quoted before, "with great power comes great responsibility".

4 out of 5 stars Great for cabinet work - Not so great for decking   June 17, 2008
After a year in my home woodworking shop this little jewel was the first driver I reached for. It's super-light & handy and the built-in light is a godsend when screwing in drawer slides in the back of a dark cabinet. I recently rebuilt my front porch porch driving 2 3/4 inch screws through composite decking into treated lumber. Again it was the first tool I reached for but ---. It USUALLY got the job done but very slowly and I felt like I was pulling a semi-trailer with a 4 cylinder pickup. I began to worry about wearing out a great tool in one project so I switched over to an old Craftsman 18V drill and things went much better.

This is a great driving tool for light to medium work. And the impact mechanism seems to be especially effective when removing old corroded fasteners. Just don't expect it to frame a house or build a deck.

5 out of 5 stars Best tool ever!   June 16, 2008
I am a 35 year electrician. I bought this drill with a little bit of caution. My worries were soon forgotten. I love it. Does anything I ask. Drives screws or tapcons in concrete. Would recommend this tool to anyone.
I own all Bosch power tools and this one is at the top of the list.
