Amazon.com Review
When we look at jointers, there are a couple of tests at the top of our list, and this model aces them all.

First, it's got a generous 8-inch wide bed, and you can't do better than that. But icing on the cake is the bed's luxuriously long 82 inches, giving you absolute support and accuracy on the infeed side. We like the way the infeed table travels up and down; instead of a handwheel, you just loosen the locking lever and move the long-handled table adjustment arm. Leverage is our friend, and there'll be no more skinned knuckles! Lock the lever again and you're ready to cut. When you want to cut rabbets - a beautifully simple job on this jointer -- override the 1/8-inch depth limit by turning the control knob. Twist it again to re-engage this feature. The outfeed table adjusts to knife height easily, should your jointer not retain its factory setting during shipment. It's worth checking.

We like this fence best of all the competitors for a couple of reasons. There's a non-marring insert in the fence contacts that prevent scratching the infeed and outfeed tables while you're adjusting it. The fence rides smoothly across the beds and locks easily. But its best trick is tilting 45 degrees - both forward and backward, giving you a total angle to the back of 135 degrees for beveling. And instead of grasping the whole fence to tilt it, this one moves beautifully by handwheel.

The three-knife cutterhead should be perfectly adjusted from the factory, but to be safe, we recommend checking it before running any stock. The head turns at 7,000 rpm, giving you 21,000 cuts per minute and a super-smooth surface.

The final feature that won our admiration is the placement of the power switch. You'll find it below the infeed bed on most jointers, but on this Powermatic, it's positioned on its own arm above the infeed table. We like this spot best for safety's sake - a jointer is a beautiful machine, but with just a little operator error, it has the potential to maim. Having the power switch in the open just makes good safety sense.

We recognize that a jointer like this is a big investment, but we trust the Powermatic name for quality, reliability and a long life. You won't regret this purchase. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

5 out of 5 stars Updated review   December 2, 2006
I have looked at this jointer for three years now. It is a beautiful, heavy piece of equipment. I was actually warned by the dealer about this jointer! He said that another customer said that the beds were not flat and much to the owner's suprise they were off. I used a Pinnacle straight edge and it was perfectly flat. I chose this model over the Grizzly because I purchased another Grizzly product and it had a cheap switch. Everything about this machine says high quality. Thanks, Bobby Stanley.

2 out of 5 stars major disappointment   January 26, 2006

I was in the process of upgrading my shop and wanted a jointer with longer beds than my 8" Grizzly. After reading the review (the only one at your site) I was sold. I received my jointer Dec. 29,2005 and couldn't wait to get it set up, which I could never do. Powermatic actually authorized a local dealer to come to my shop and adjust it for me. After 3 hours and lots of frustration, we found that the outfeed table had a .006 bow, and the infeed table had an .008 bow, which the technician said was unacceptable and that was causing my problems. After they contacted Powermatic, they said that those tolerances are acceptable, and they would not do anything about it. Now I have a jointer that does not produce good glue joints. Also the fence had a bow in it. I am very disappointed and am looking into returning the Powermatic and returning to my Grizzly.

Just P/U today (Not such an easy task at 610Lbs.) Shipping is around 750. I also have a DJ20; I was made an offer for that old stand by that was to good to pass up. Thus I purchased the PJ882. This is my first Powermatic piece of gear so I was a bit hesitant, those fears were quickly erased. Powermatic being thoughtful has 4 built-in pins under the tables that slide out so you can use straps to lift the 882 without disturbing the I & O tables. SMART! There is no real assemble, the unit is near ready for work right out of the box. I opted for the 3 phase (because I can), I had my machinist 24"straight edge, machinist square, 45 triangle, all ready for those expected adjustment. Everything looked great. After a quick wire-up I hit the start button, which by the way is lofted up on it own stand above the tables and utilizes a twit lock type stop button, very nice! I started with an old bent, twisted 2x4. Within a pass or two I had a square piece of lumber. No snipe, no tear out, no adjustments necessary. But if there were any needed the way this system (Parallelogram) works you can completely adjust both tables 4 corners using a cam system, again SMART!
Only dislike; very minor, but there is a plastic piece that is mounted with two screws to the bottom face of the fence, this keeps the fence bottom from tearing up, (scratching) the out feed table while adjusting, (45 forward to 45 backward) you just need to make sure that it is not proud of the fence otherwise your pushing a piece through and it will catch. Easy fix, just be aware.
Go for it! I don't think you'll be disappointed. 83" table surface, niiiiice!
