Amazon.com Product Description Whether you're an experienced woodworker or just a beginner the Jet 708351VS/JML-1014VS mini-lathe is the perfect tool for turning small projects such as small bowls, bottle stoppers, ornaments, and other spindle work. Ready to use right out of the box, the 1/2 horsepower motor is powerful enough to remove materials fast and the variable speed control (500 to 3900 rpm) is located up front on the switch where you need it. Weighing in at approximately 69 pounds, the Jet mini-lathe can be easily moved around the shop, home or garage. The mini lathe's 14-inch sturdy cast iron bed with a 10-inch swing and a "live center" tailstock with a full 2-inch ram capacity is ideal for any serious woodworker or weekend hobbyist. -- C. Making the chips fly! mini lathe January 22, 2008 This is my first mini-lathe and first attempt at turning. The learning process has been fun and the lathe works like it was advertised to do. So far no problems with the equipment as is is most simple to use. I wish there were a way to access all speeds from the control panel without changing belts, maybe on future models. I usually decide on one of the three settings and go from there, seems to work out fine. The lathe is quiet and is most accurate,it does give static on the shop radio but is no big deal Excellent purchase, most happy with the results so far!
Excellent value for the money. Even if it's Chinese made. January 9, 2008 I've never bought a Jet tool before. I found the build quality to be excellent and the operation very smooth throughout all speeds. I highly recommend this lathe to any novice that wants to turn pens or small bowls. I have it sitting on a bench and it never moves from vibration. Excellent product. Especially with Amazon Prime shipping.
Nice lathe March 12, 2007 Bought this as my first lathe. It's just sitting on top of my workmate and I haven't had any problems with vibration. Arrived in perfect condition. The tailstock and the headstock align perfectly. Moving the belt to a different pulley is fast and easy. The electronic speed control is very handy. What really impressed me is that they use metal handles on the releases for the rest and tailstock.
careless March 9, 2007 This item was shipped to me twice with the speed control box shattered and pieces all over the box. The problem lies in Jets packing and U.P.S. shipping methods. Amazon was very good about making things right. I opted to go with the non-variable speed model and glad I did. I don't change speeds that much.
Nice Lathe January 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a fine little lathe. It quietly purrs at full rpm. THe headstock to tailstock alignment is right on. I would have rated this lathe at 4 1/2 stars, because of the dinky speed control box. Even in its styrofoam packaging, it arrived with the plastic louvers broken. This is not a major problem, but a metal or sturdier plastic housing would be more appropriate for this otherwise high quality lathe.
