Amazon.com Review
When Porter-Cable recently reintroduced this popular planer, professionals everywhere rejoiced. It is widely regarded as the most solid, reliable, and effective hand planer on the market, and we heartily agree. While other tools boast speeds between 12,000 and 15,000 rpm, the Porta-Plane's beefy 7 amp motor runs at 22,000 rpm. Porter-Cable combines that power with a spiral-blade cutterhead that shaves the wood rather than chopping at it the way a straight blade does, producing smoother finished edges than those produced by other power planes. This model has a solid and true stainless-steel bed and integral fence, which bevels from 15 to 90 degrees. The price may seem pretty steep compared to other hand planers on the market, but in this instance you definitely get what you pay for. For pros that expect to do a whole lot of door trimming and hanging, there is no better tool available. --Brian Trinen

5 out of 5 stars Top of the line   August 29, 2007
Silky smooth cuts, dead-on accuracy, heavy duty...what more can I say? If money is no object, this is the way to go. If not wanting to spend the $, the Bosch is a close second at $300 less.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!   November 9, 2006

I have used the Porter Cable Porta-Plane before, so I already new it was a good planer. Now that I own one, I finally got the chance to use it brand new. I have used it on about 5 doors, so far. Once you get the hang of how it works, you can make absolutly straight runs with it from one end to another on a door. I have even been able to shape the doors to fit the old jambs when they weren't straight. I can just draw a pencil line, and I am able to basically free-hand the planer along the line. I have even used it to cut the height of the doors so I didn't have to use a saw, and I have used it to clean-up the saw cut on some doors that needed to be cut down. I would recomend having a second blade ready because if you do a lot of deep cuts, it dulls pretty quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Use the Right Tool for the Job   September 30, 2006

I've been using this door planer for years and it has been around longer then i've been hanging doors. It must be about 20 years old. This planer is a necessity for hanging doors. In fact, that is all I use it for.
When i'm dealing with doors that cost more then a $1000, I don't want to mess it up with some cheap planer, I use the right tool for the job.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Plane   July 6, 2006

I just received a new 9118 and the shoe plates are not flat -- not even close! I am returning it unused. Warped plates make this tool basically worthless. I've noticed a decline in Porter Cable quality and this is either indicative of it or just my bad luck. Porter Cable will not get a second chance on this one. $400 is a lot to pay for a relatively simple tool like this one. It shouldn't be hard to get it right! I make my living with my tools and I don't have time to waste on poor quality.

5 out of 5 stars best door planer available.   April 19, 2005

If you plain on hanging doors for a living, or already do so. buy this planer. it will last forever. with the finger lever you can adjust the height as you plane to help follow high and low spots.

for 3% bevels it is perfect. one other reviewer mentioned about beveling a block to help set. great idea. but it only takes a few minutes or less to adjust bevel.

I have owned it for 2 years (since 5 2003) and have hung over 300 doors.
