4 out of 5 stars Seem to be pretty good bits, lousy case   June 17, 2008
I'm just a hobbyist and this set looks to serve my purposes for quite some time. I will agree with one of the other reviewers about the packaging problem although my issue is different. Mine arrived intact but I'm not sure it'll stay that way if I can't get the bits OUT of their storage holes any easier. The first one I went to use had to be pried out with the end of a metal straight edge and the rest don't seem to be any better. I'm now having to use visegrips to take them out one by one and clean the protectant gel (or glue if you will) off and even then they're an incredibly tight fit in the case. This gripe isn't too related to their routing function but still, it's a pretty poor execution of the storage case.

3 out of 5 stars Sticky Situation   April 21, 2008

I recently received this set of router bits from Amazon and have not used them yet, but you should still read the review if you are serious about buying from Amazon. When I received the set, the box was in good shape and the bits were presentable. they look sharp and sturdy and I was anxious to try them out. The first problem I had however was that everything (including the outside of the box) was covered in a film of grease. I've read reviews of other tools sent by amazon having the same problem, so I wasn't completely surprised.

What did bother me though was that the set must have been sitting in the warehouse for quite some time because the lubricant that was intended to make it easy for the bits to slide out of their plastic inserts was so old it had turned to glue. I was able to get 2 of the bits out with relative ease, but each of the other 28 bits required me to use pliers and all the strength I could muster. I was as careful as I could be trying not to damage the bits and luckily was able to come away with 29 bits unscathed - one received a chip at the base because I had to grip it so hard with the pliers.

I worked for about 8 hours (split over two days) prying the bits out, cleaning off the hardened lubricant and removing all of the plastic inserts from the case. If anyone else comes across this problem, it may be preferable to use some sort of solvent to loosen things up versus the brute force attack that I tried. In the end, the excited and happy feeling that I had when I first opened the package was no longer there.

As I said above, the bits themselves look like good tools, but I would recommend purchasing them from a different source.

4 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good   November 5, 2007

The bits I've used from this set have performed well. I hesitated to buy a set of router bits, but at the price, (and the apparent quality), it was more cost effective. So far, so good.

4 out of 5 stars Poor handling detracts from product   September 27, 2007

I just received this set. The outer box was intact, but the shelves that hold the bits inside the case had popped free and everything was rattling around in there. The bits look to have held up well, but the whole set should either have been packed more carefully or built in a more solid box. The cutting edges look straight and smooth, but some of the other surfaces of the bits are a bit chewed.

Also, it can be a challenge to get some of the bits out of their storage positions safely. The smaller straight bits and dovetails have nothing to grab onto in order to slide them out of their snug slots. In this case, it is fortunate that the shelves were broken free in the case because lifting out the shelf makes it a lot easier to pull the bit free.

The bit selection is pretty good, though I'd like it if they included some interchangeable bearings to make the rabbeting bits more versatile. The way I would use this, there's not much redundancy in the set, though I probably wouldn't buy quite so many straight bits if I were getting them individually. If I needed to route a straight 3/4", I would just as soon make two passes with a 1/2" bit. This is especially true if not using a high horsepower router.

I will probably send this set back because of the damage. I am not impressed enough to automatically have it replaced and will take another look at the alternatives before I do. This seems like a great value set for the typical hobbyist, but I may be looking for a little more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent quality and reliability   September 15, 2007

I own many Woodline router bit sets, including this one, and every one of them has been very impressive with no exception. The bits are very well made with perfect carbide edges and never a scratch on any of them. They can cut all day without a problem. The cuts are always very smooth even when cuts are very aggressive using the larger bits.

The bits have a lifetime warranty which is an indicator of the faith Woodline has in their own product. Woodline's customer service was very helpful and courteous in the one occasion when I contacted them about a different product.
