Poor Packaging September 12, 2008
Maxus EX8301 15 Amp 2 Horsepower 15 Gallon Oiled Wheeled Single Hot Dog Compressor
On September 4th, 2008, UPS delivered the Maxus EX8301 air compressor I ordered through Amazon.com. Upon delivery, the UPS delivery man pointed out that the shipping container (cardboard box) was damaged.
I accepted the package and later opened it. Inside, I found the compressor damaged. One pressure gauge was broken off and laying on the bottom of the package. The other gauge was bent and damaged. The capacitor cover on the electric motor was bent. The plastic belt cover was cracked and the unit's frame was bent. The muffler was missing all together. The company's advertisement states the compressor will run on 120 volts or 220 volts. This unit came with a 220 volt only motor.
Subtracting the broken and bent pieces, it appears the air compressor itself is a fine piece of equipment. I briefly pugged it into an electrical outlet and it ran very quietly and smoothly. The price through Amazon was unbeatable and the shipping was free. I did, however, return the unit because of the multiplicity of damage. I blame the damage on poor packaging, not rough treatment by the shipping company. The 135 pound unit was placed in a thin cardboard box with virtually no internal support. Usually, a piece of equipment like this is bolted to a wood substructure in the bottom of the box. In this case, it was not.
Additional information: Maxus air compressors are actually made by Campbell Hasfield. If you read the reviews on the same unit sold under the Campbell Hasfield name, (VT6290) you will find that those compressors are also poorly packaged and always arrive damaged.
