Product Description
Extra-large spindle bearings "6 PLUS 6" and "VS6" spindle and spindle pulley are supported by four over-sized, pre-loaded, lubrcated-for-life ball bearings. Massive quill is a full 2" diameter. "VS6" has the same excellent construction, PLUS an extra bearing below the spindle pulley. This fine combination of features assures freedom from chatter, long, maintenance-free life and maximum pressure at the drill point. Six speeds offer unbelievably wide range of speeds with a low-cost 1725 rpm motor- 425, 600, 1100, 2050, 3900 and 5500 rpm- 11.8 to 1 speed ratio.

5 out of 5 stars Tools that made Delta Great   December 25, 2007

First of all I'd like to say this is NOT your garden variety Delta made in China "junk" tool. I bought mine Feb. 24, 1986 for the extremly expensive price (at the time) of $441.66 + tax locally, (sorry Amazon you just weren't around in 1986). After 21 years and 10 months one of the bearings in the spindle assembly failed and I went to the online Delta service parts website to order a new bearing. While there I noticed a link to Amazon to "buy now", and low and behold they are still to be had!!!
When I bought mine it was labeled simply "Rockwell-Delta 15" Floor Model Drill Press". That was before Rockwell Intl. sold the Delta power tool division. It was also before the Delta Brand, as I have come to know it today, is in my opinion, almost synonymous with cheap Taiwan / Chinese imports with the emphasis, it seems to me, more on price points and less on quality.
I have no regrets. The stroke is a full 6 inches. It has a split head design which means if you ever experience quill run out due to wear you can take up on the head adjustment and zero it back out. A design feature lacking in most of the imports. If you want a tool you may need to replace a ball bearing in (<$10.00) 20 years from now, this is your tool.
PS-now you know why you should keep your owners manual & parts list.
