| Customer Reviews:
Great drill press, excellent customer support October 10, 2008 I'm very happy with this drill press. I bought it to replace a Delta that drilled about 300 holes then died. ("Made in China...") I had to call Palmgren a couple times for help during assembly and each time I received a courteous response and accurate information.
Here are a couple assembly tips: 1: Have some mineral spirits already on hand so you don't have to make a special trip to the hardware store.
2: At least two people are required to safely install the head assembly on the post unless you have some kind of mechanical lifting device. You really will need help.
3: You'll have one part left over after assembly. It's the "drift key." It's supposed to be left over.
4: The instructions tell you to close the chuck and press it against a board to tighten the chuck and arbor in place. By "Close," Palmgren means to rotate the chuck so the claws that hold the drill bit are retracted inside the chuck. If you rotate the chuck so the claws themselves are closed, like I did, the chuck could end up mis-aligned. Mis-alignment causes vibration and the bit will not be perfectly vertical. That's obviously a big problem. It's extremely difficult to separate the chuck and arbor once they're tightened together, so make sure you do this correctly the first time! The instruction manual should make this step more clear.
This is a heavy duty drill press. It weighs a ton, and everything about it feels solid and well-built.
not sure what to think June 5, 2006 June 3rd, - I orded this drill press on May 26th after much thought and searching. I read others reviews and went to different places to look at floor drill presses. I got the free shipping which also helped being that shipping is $150. The shippment was fast took around 7 days and had a holiday in there. From the outside the box looked fine. When I opened the box and started to unpack found the head with the pully cover had a HUGE dent in it. So bad the door couldn't even open. I emailed and called Amazon. On the phone they told me that this item was to big and handled by a special dept. They would be in touch. The email came back and said saw you talked to someone glad issue was resolved.
The packing is poor on this item considering it weighs 250 lbs. It is in a cardboard box with styrofoam fill in. One good bump and you have problems. The finish on this item was poorer then I expected. There was a lot of scratches down to the metal. This may of been form the poor shipping. The spindle handle appears to be kinda cheap to me, Was hoping for better. I did not put the item together so I can't tell you much more. All I know is I am out my $400 and have a drill press that I can't even use. It has been over 24 hours and still no one from the special dept has been in touch. Amazom does not seem to be in much of a hurry to help me, was told on the phone it might take 3 days or more b4 I might hear something. So at this point I'm not sure what to think. If I were you I would keep looking. Will let you know more as it happens.
June 14, - well it took 3 days for Amazon to get in touch, the said they had already shipped my replacement on June 6th. The shippment tracking shows Drill was suppose to arrive on the 15th that has now slipped to the 19th for some reason. Still no drill.
June 17, - got new press, inspected it and it was fine, Assembled the press it was easy and took little over an hour. I suggest that you have 2 people the head is heavy and hard to handle alone. Found the press to run very quite and smooth. Changing the speeds is very easy. Couldn't really measure the runout but everything seemed very tight and no play. The only low point is the tilting of the table. it only tilts 45 deg to left and right and you need a wrench to do this. I really dont need this but if you do I suggest the Delta it is much better in this respect. Over all I like the press It was a pain with the frist one being damaged in shippment but I would say worth the wait. If you are looking for a well built heavy duty drill press this is a good one. Hope this helps someone.

Amazon lists this drill press as being 3/4hp and 12.5 amps. I looked at the Palmgren web page and is is listed as having 1/2 hp and 8.5 amps. Amazon messed up by giving the specs for the larger DP. I contacted the company (Palmgren) who confirmed Amazons' goof. I just wonder how long it will take Amazon to edit their BOO BOO.
quality tool March 31, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am a machinist of 25 years. Good tools are a must for me. I looked at alot of drill presses before the Palmgren. I have used other Palmgen tools vises ect. and they were quality tools. I put this thing together (very easy) and could not get over how smooth and quiet it is. The chuck is good not the best I have ever used but good for wood working very little run out. The price here at Amazon was as good or better than the other machines I have looked at. I spent 3 months looking at every machine I could find including the wood show at Indy. Thanks and keep the coments posted on all tools it helps me alot
Excellent Product!! April 5, 2005 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
I needed a decent quality drill press for my workshop. I build acoustic guitars and my use for drilling holes is limited; however, the few holes I do drill must be quality.
I started reading the reviews for the Jet, Delta, and Grizzly products below $500 and I was very nervous regarding their runout. I had originally bought a small Craftsman that had terrible runout; and which, I promptly returned. Runout was something I just didn't want to mess with. I had never heard of Palmgren but their promise of negligable spindle runout seemed promising. So I took a chance and am sure glad I did. The motor seems more than competent. The spindle depth is quite large and there is no runout. The chuck is also of good quality.
One of the v-belts did cause a lot of noise and vibration (which did not affect the performance at all). So I switched the belts out with PowerTwist link belts - which I strongly recommend for ANY woodworking tool as they are nothing short of amazing. The drill press is now barely audible and there is no noticeable vibration.
The drill press is well made with just about every part being cast iron. The pieces are well-machined and appear to be under tight tolerances. The paint job is attractive and finely done. Please note that I have experience with high quality machinery. I purchased a $5000 Italian-made MiniMax jointer/planer that is one beautiful machine.
Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase. I would strongly recommend this drill press over the competition.
