jo4hn's work sharp July 14, 2008 Excellent product. Within a couple hours I had all my chisels trimming hair off my arm (not really, but you get the idea).
Work Sharp 3000 June 9, 2008 Don't argue! Just get it. It measured 35db in noise. Regular conversation is 60db! Sharpening is a breeze now. My blades have NEVER been this sharp. I can't imagine why I didn't get this before. I saw a demonstration at a local woodworking show. The demonstrator was able to cut the hairs of his arm with MY chisel. Two days later, I bought one.
No Longer Dread Sharpening May 29, 2008 I've always done my sharpening by hand on stones. I was often working with slightly dull tools to try to get the most out of the work done in sharpening. With the Work Sharp I now touch up tools during the work to keep them razor sharp. Especially with chisels, I keep the optional leather wheel in place and "strop" the edge often while working to keep it razor sharp. Periodically I resharpen all my tools now so they all stay ready to use. I think I can sharpen them all is about what it used to take to do one.
Great for chisels, not so good for plane irons April 12, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you need sharp chisels in a hurry, this device is for you. Just remember to buy the assortment pack of sand paper disks because those provided don't cover the gamut and they go quickly.
For plane irons, this tool has some uses - but not for the bigger Lie Nielsen plane irons. For the standard size irons, this gizmo does short work of lapping and gets you a fairly decent edge. But wider irons (and chisels) won't fit into the carriage. You can still do the lapping on this, which the more expensive Tormek sharpening system won't let you do at all. But for the final edge, You still need to resort to guides and stones or sandpaper on glass plates for larger irons.
There's a market out there for the tool that will do it all. Wonder who will be the first there.
Sharp as a tack . . . even sharper . . . April 10, 2008 I ordered the Work Sharp WS3000 Wood Tool Sharpener after hemming and hawing for nearly a year. I just thought that $200 for something to sharpen my chisels or plane blades was a bit high. After all, how good could it be? I have a diamond sharpening system and a bevel guide made just for it. Well, let me tell you that it is worth every single penny I spent buying it (and free shipping too!).
I have had it about 3 weeks now and what used to take me a looonggg time to do now takes about 15 minutes AND the chisels are sharper than they have ever been. I did not think that it was possible.
Even my neighbor down the street (who knows tools very well) was amazed at how sharp his rusted planer blades came out when I asked if I could sharpen them (just to see what might happen with blades that are REALLY BAD). I sharpened the 3 of them in about 20 minutes (they were rusty afterall) and returned them that day. He had to see the machine right away because he did not believe I could do it in such a short time. He even offered his chisels and other plane blades for me to sharpen (how nice of him).
Don't hesitate to purchase this machine if you hate sharpening your blades by hand. It is extremely easy and quick.
The only cavet I could think of is to be very careful and wipe around the machine frequently if you are sharpening a lot of blades. I did not think about that until I started smelling some burning phenolic. It ended up being the plastic base where you can bolt the machine down. The metal shavings (and there were a lot of them) were so hot that they piled on the plastic and started melting it. Just be careful!
Otherwise, don't even hesitate to buy this marvel. It saves so much time that you can spend on build something rather than trying to keep your tools in shape.
