Great value - Does things other tools can't June 5, 2010 Robert S. Tobias (Arlington, VA USA) I bought this a few weeks ago when Amazon had it marked down a bit more than normal. At the time I didn't know what I would use it for but figured it would come in handy at some point.
Last week I needed to take apart a chair and one of the 1/2" bolts stripped. There was no room for a hacksaw or any other tool I had. This thing cut through the bolt, while easily avoiding damaging anything else, in less than a minute. The time I saved in that one use, even compared to a hacksaw if it had worked, paid for the tool.
It is solidly built, comes with a bunch of disks, has a great case, and feels "solid" when used.
I'm sure it's not the best angle grinder around. If you use one frequently I'm sure there are better quality grinders available. (Hence the 4 stars). However, if you only have an occasional need or want to have one of these on hand for when you will, I don't think this will let you down.
its powerful...sometimes... October 21, 2009 Christopher Bruch 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
i bought this angle grinder while i was searching for a cheap, yet powerful, and reliable angle grinder. it came with a carrying case and five abrasive grinding wheels. I started it up, and it was smooth, and used it to cut through some 1/4 inch steel plate, and it hardy bogged down. So far, i have used it for probably a total of an hour, under very strenuous use, and occasionally i will start it up, and there will be a loss of power, and a burning smell from it. but if I let it cool down then restart it, it works great. I hope this grinder lasts me a long time.
Problems with unit. August 20, 2009 basil mick (east coast) The unit was purchased new. It makes an odd sound starting up.
Used it for 5 minutes making light cuts in stone.
IT cut however, the diamond blade stopped often enough that I think I need a more powerful grinder. I wasn't trying to make deep cuts but lightly cutting over multiple passes.
The top plate that holds the blade has a channel where it connects to the spinning arbor. The channel deformed a little. Since this channel is not snug, the angular momentum of the turning shaft does not get translated efficiently to the blade.
The fit should be snug.
Case was fine and nice enough for me.
5 disks were included that were all the same, metal grinding disks.
Will probably return for something with more power.
Solid, Great Value, Powerful Performance! July 7, 2009 Flynn Farralone (California) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was installing a new sink in the kitchen and had to enlarge the opening to accomodate it, which meant cutting through granite tile. After much research, it seemed the best way to do it was to use an angle grinder fitted with a diamond blade. I didn't want to make a big investment so I found the Porter-Cable model at Lowe's for $39.99 and was all set to buy it, but this model was right next to it for only $5 more -- plus it came with a case and 5 grinding disks. I'd read that the Hitachi was a solid tool so I went for it. I sure am glad I did -- it is incredible! So small but with so much power, and is very solidly built. Changing the disk was simple. I was very pleased. For general use, it's more than sufficient for most DIY'ers.
I am puzzled why the Hitachi's handle is angled slightly inward -- all the other grinders have their handles at a 90-degree angle from the body. It didn't affect performance, but I don't see the rationale.
At any rate, it's totally worth it. With the diamond blade, it made a 1" deep, 36" long cut through GRANITE in about 4 minutes (including brief rests) -- I was amazed. I used a Hitachi diamond blade for dry cutting -- it was incredible!
Great Value. April 6, 2009 Uchechi Nwokocha (Hope Mills, NC) This is a great bang for buck item. I even got a case and 5 disks with mine. Comfortable grip and quiet compared to a circular saw.
