Product Description No more twisting and bending to see the display. The LCD display has been rotated and angled upward to greatly improve the readability. Measuring stock up to 6" thick, the gauge displays the thickness of the wood coming out of the planer to plus or minus 0.0025" accuracy. The large display reads in inches with fractions or in millimeters and you can make absolute and incremental measurements. The fractions are displayed using Precise Fraction Technology which provides 4 times the accuracy of other fractional readouts. Constant memory retains calibration even when turned OFF. Simple mounting brackets allow you to mount on many planers without drilling any holes. Spare battery included.

Affordable Precision for your planer August 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I installed this unit on a 1995 Powermatic 180 - a large 18" x 6" capacity, stationary planer. It involved fabicating a few brackets but it was fairly simple once you understand how the unit "reads" changes in depth.
On most portable planers the cutter head is raised and lowered in relation to a fixed bed - this is how the Wixey's supplied brackets were designed to be used. On stationary planers like mine the cutterhead is fixed and the bed is moved up and down to change the depth of cut.
Basically, the Wixey readout moves up and down the scale which is typically "fixed" on a portable planer; on a stationary planer, like the Powermatic, it's easier to mount the unit on the left side, by attaching the scale with a bracket under the gib screws - in this installation, the scale moves up and down with the bed and the Wixey readout is fixed. Maybe this explanation is not clear but it's the best I can come up with -I'll try and post a photo which will help.
The Wixey is extremely accurate - more accurate than is really necessary for most woodworking projects but it is very reassuring when the Wixey reads: 0.75" 3/4" exactly and you know that the finished stock will be that dimension.
A few words of caution: if you are installing the Wixey by fabricating your own brackets, regardless of the planer, make sure the brackets are made of thick enough stock so there won't be any bending (I used 1/8" x 4" aluminum); make sure the brackets are fastened securly; and make sure the measuring head moves freely over the entire range of measurement otherwise you will not get consistent readings. All in all, a great product at a reasonable price - they even supply a spare battery. Well done Wixey!
