3 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect   February 14, 2008
This is an update as of November, 2008. The electronic part of my feeder stopped working. I called Contech customer service and told them I had purchased the bird feeder in January 2008 and it should be covered by the two-year warranty. After a few questions and confirmations, they agreed to send me a new bird feeder. I would put Contech to the top of my list as far as good customer service. I have had two Contech Scare Crow units for five years and the electronics on them still work perfectly. So I hope to get some years on the bird feeder replacement.

The bird feeder has absolutely stopped squirrels from getting on the feeder when the electronics are working. The only real con is that the design of the lid is flawed. It took my backyard squirrels no more that a few days to figure out they could pull off the lid with their teeth and chow down while sitting on top of the bird feeder. I called Contech customer service about this and the fellow I talked to admitted that the easy-to-get-off lid was a design flaw. He suggested I duct tape the lid down or put a bar across it. The duct tape works but is ugly. I finally went to Home Depot and got an expansion spring short enough that I could stretch it across two sides of the metal hanger and then push it down across the lid. That way when I need to fill the feeder I just work the spring up to the top of the hanger so that I can get the lid off. When the spring is pushed down across the lid the squirrels can't get the lid off (at least so far). Now the good news. Once the squirrels found that they couldn't get the lid off, they hung off the top of the feeder to investigate the feeder openings and they completed they electrical circuit. They got a taste of the electrical shock. That caused the squirrels to quickly jump off the feeder. We also were having problem with a raccoon that tore up the previous feeder trying to get it open. That problem apparently also has been solved.

We live in New Hampshire and cannot have most bird feeders in the summer because they will be destroyed by the black bears. This is the first bird feeder that we can hang high in a tree and not have it emptied by the local red and gray squirrels. Before we got this we tried the usual approaches:

Red pepper - Spraying the feeder with an oil and pepper mix didn't work.
Cage-type feeders - This works for gray squirrels, but any cage with a small enough mesh to keep out red squirrels will also block the birds.
Baffles - A regular feeder needs to be 8 feet from any branch or the squirrels will jump to it. This is impossible to arrange in most trees.

This Squirrel Scatter feeder is a very simple solution. We have it hanging on a branch outside our second-story window. It only takes one or two experiences with the shock from this feeder and even the most determined squirrel will leave it alone. Every now and then a squirrel will stop back and very carefully attempt to eat from the feeding ports. The mild shock immediately sends him scrambling away. The construction quality also seems quite good. Highly recommended.
