4 out of 5 stars Dancing with the rake   March 18, 2008

The new season of "Dancing with the Stars" began last night. I mention the show in passing because I have my own "dance" show going on right in my own yard. It's called "Dancing with the Rake."

And dancing, I do. Sweep. Sweep. Turn. Underarm sweep. Thrust out. Pull in. Chop. Chop. And again. Sweep.....

Oh my, it's that time of the year if you have Live Oak trees. Nasty little buggers. When your trees are shedding in the fall, mine is sitting there with its dark green little leaves, just biding their time. Then in the spring when all other yards are looking good, flutter, flutter, zip, zip, down they fall, singly, in pairs, in dozens. They look like a horde of butterflies coming in for spring.

On Sunday I took out this rake (actually a Sears model) and began my annual dance. Since my Live Oak has a tree trunk with a circumference of four feet (oh yeah, it's a whopper), it puts out the leaves--er, puts down? drops out? dumps? delivers with glee? with malice? OK, I'm exaggerating. It's just a tree doing its tree thing (without getting into the realm philosophy).

On Sunday I bagged two 39 gallons bags by raking just within arm's length. Today I did it again and sacked three bags' worth. My lovely neighbor came out and said, "You have millions of leaves." Yes, I wanted to say, you are so observant. Actually, I think her husband blew MY leaves which were on THEIR driveway back into MY yard. Can you believe that? Nor did I mention that half the leaves came from HER pecan tree. But I rake those without complaint because I "borrow" pecans from her yard.

Meanwhile I just have to dance and will dance about 40 bags full. Baaaaaa.
