5 out of 5 stars Great For Making Chocolate Covered Strawberries and Chocolate Candies   November 15, 2008
I bought this because my child's teacher wanted to let the kids make chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine's day. I needed an easy way to melt chocolate and transport it to the classroom, as well as something that would not be too hot to have around children. I also did not want to spend a lot of money. This was perfect.

A few things you should know.

1. This does not look elegant. If you are trying to impress guests at a dinner party you will be disappointed with the look of this gadget. It looks more like a toy and it feels like a toy.

2. This is tiny. You will not be using it to make tons of chocolates at one time. If you are looking for something that can melt all the chocolate you'll need to mold homemade candies for everyone you know for the holidays then one of these won't make you happy. (you'll need three and will have to refill them - probably better to use your crock pot). But most of us don't need to have that much melted chocolate around.

3. It was perfect for my needs. It had just the perfect amount of chocolate to allow the children in a 21-kid classroom to dip strawberries and other fruits for a fun party. What a hit! I'll do it again. It was easy, the kids ate the fruit, they had a blast, clean-up was a cinch. I started to melt the chocolate at home about 45 minutes before I needed to leave, and then I plugged the unit in at the classroom to keep the chocolate warm. It did take 45 minutes to melt the chocolate. Start early or you'll be frantic.

4. I think it would be a great gift for a child that likes to cook or make crafts. Throw in a package of chocolate and some chocolate molds and you have a fun gift -- kind of like an easy bake oven for chocolate molding.

I have used it since to melt chocolates so that my kids could mold chocolates. They made chocolate lollipops and then decorated them. The kids thought that it was fun, and molding chocolates is easy enough that young children can do it with some supervision. The chocolate takes a little bit of time to melt, but on the plus side you do not have to babysit it. You don't have to worry about getting condensation in it (water) and ruining your whole batch of chocolate as you do if you use the hot bath method of melting chocolate. The unit does NOT get very hot so you don't have to worry about a child getting burned. I didn't have to add oil to the chocolate -- as required with chocolate fountains. The unit was easy to clean. Small enough to store (a huge issue in our house).

I did not use any of the little plastic accessories that came with the unit. They look like toys too. Instead I purchased wooden skewers for the kids to use in the classroom. I think I used regular spoons when we molded chocolates at home, but my kids liked the little plastic accessories --I remember they wanted to use them because they came with it. I considered buying a 2nd unit so I could have two kinds of chocolate going at the same time -- milk and white or dark and white -- but we really don't mold chocolates or make chocolate covered strawberries that often. So for now, we do a batch of milk or dark chocolate and then do a small batch of white chocolate (I have a child that can't eat milk or dark chocolate so we always have to make white).

Bottom line: Figure out what your needs are. If you are not looking to impress people with the appearance of the unit and you don't need to melt a lot of chocolate at a time this unit may very well fit your needs.

1 out of 5 stars not what is advertised   March 16, 2008

I bought this based on the photo and description. I have 2 already and couldn't find any more for a long time. My old one is just as it's shown in the photo and described here. The old version has a ceramic (visible in photo) removable pot, 4 dipping forks, 4 ceramic (not plastic) bowls, etc. The new one that just arrived has a thin metal pot, 2 plastic dipping bowls, a plastic lid , 2 forks, one ladel, and 6 molded sets. Not what is advertised or shown in the photo. Check the product weight description - 4 lbs, however shipping weight is only 2 lbs? now I know, that's not a typo. Very dissapointed!!!!

4 out of 5 stars I thought it was a toy...it's so small   January 24, 2008
When I opened the box, I thought it was a joke because the pot is so small. However, it's a great size for home events. I actually had too much chocolate melted. The pot doesn't seem to get extremely hot (which is a good thing), but it melts the chocolate right away. It didn't burn nor did the chocolate stick to the pot. It's great. I love it. Don't be fooled by the size.

4 out of 5 stars Great for a romantic night in   November 16, 2007
I purchased this fondue pot for my boyfriend's birthday and it was great! It was just perfect for the two of us, but it would probably be too small for having company over.
The one thing I would suggest is to find a good chocolate fondue recipe other than the one provided in the instruction manual, it uses vegetable oil and melted chocolate chips and I know there are much better recipes out there.
Shipped fast...overall a good buy.
