Nesco Dehydrator November 24, 2008 I am learning to use my new dehydrator, but so far I love it. It is quiet and the timer is a lifesaver. I have found that I needed more than the fruit roll sheets and clean-a-screen tray. I like to do apples and put a cinnamon sugar on some of them. All in all I would say I am so pleased with this dehydrator.
Great unit... November 17, 2008 I really love this unit. It was a huge upgrade from my Ronco that i got for Christmas a couple of years ago. The unit and trays are much more durable. I also love that the heating element is a the top. This makes clean up much easier for me. I'm so glad that i spent the extra and got this unit with the timer. I've overdried several batches of jerky by not shutting it off in time. I do think it's too pricey to get the extra features that should be standard in all but the entry level models. But if you are a beef jerk fan like me, this is the unit for you.
Nesco Gardenmaster Dehydrator October 13, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought 2 Nesco American Harvest Food Dehydrators in 1974. One for me and one for my grandmother. They were used extensively for drying fruits and vegetables as well as making jerky. After 24 years, the plastic became brittle so I thought it was time to replace them. Because the original dryers worked so well for so long, I immediately looked for the same brand. I bought the Gardenmaster plus 6 extra trays because it is the largest model and I dry large quantities. Within the past 2 weeks - how long I've had my new dryer - I have dried about 8 bushels of apples. Since the tree is still full, I will probably dry that many more before moving into jerky season.
The only complaints I have seen on this dryer have related to concerns regarding "recipies" not listing exact drying times. As an experienced food dryer, I can tell you this is the same no matter which dryer you use. I would be concerned about any dehydrator that stated otherwise - drying time depends on the moisture in the item your drying, humidity in the room where you have your dryer, and the amount of food placed on trays to dry. The apples I'm drying right now are VERY juicy so it is taking about 18 hours to dry 10 trays of them to perfection. After you have dried food for a while, you will be able to guess about how long it will take to dry a pariculy batch of food.
Gardenmaster 1000-watt September 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I added this dehydrator to my approximately 12-year-old Nesco. The new one is digital and has a timer, visibly counting down the number of hours I've set. That's a very handy feature for me - taking the place of leaving myself a note for start and estimated finish times and then checking the time repeatedly so I'm sure to shut off the machine. I will continue to use the older model for low temperature herb drying. The only problem I have with this, as with the older model, is where to store it. But as my jars of dried vegetables and fruit build up on the shelves - food I will use this winter and beyond and won't have to purchase later at higher prices - I figure that's a small inconvenience.
Worked just fine September 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So far I just dried apples and pears. The unit worked just fine and I like the controls. Nonstick tray liners supplied work great.Setting the temperature and time of drying was simple and highly variable depending on what you want to dry. The manual could be a bit more extensive for the FD-1020. I plan to make jerky and the dryer should be fine for that as well, but I'll probably use real marinated beef rather than ground meat shot from a gun. I was able to use trays from an older dryer whose heat unit had worn out. I recommend this dryer in spite of the rather high price.
