Product Description The home chef can add professional touches to recipes with this catering-grade cook's torch from Typhoon. The direct, hot flame may be used to caramelize the sugar surface on creme brulee, brown roasted meat for extra color and flavor, melt cheese on soups, and blacken peppers and tomatoes for easy skinning. Features include flame adjustment, trigger-style start button, comfort-grip handle, and a safety lock that prevents the torch from igniting accidentally. Able to stand upright on the counter when not in use, the torch measures 6-7/8 by 3-3/4 inches and comes in silver and other colors. The torch is shipped empty for safety reasons, so will require butane fuel and two AA batteries for operation. --Ann Bieri

A Good Torch July 22, 2008 For some time we have avoided dishes that were best if something needed to be caramelized, like creme brule, although we love them. As it got more expensive to go out and we needed to trade off a rich desert with a very meager meal to watch the waistline, little treasures done at home got even more precious. We approached the "torch" with caution - we drop things, spill things, and have set a few kitchens on fire. We read the instructions carefully and had firefighting apparatus handy - but, everything went fine! Get one! Fear not! Caramelized creme brule at home is good, cheap, and safe!

Larger than expected. Very powerful torch. Easy to refill. Works well. Not made for lighting candles.
Works great! May 11, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've never had any problem with this item. In the year I've had it, it has never overheated or melted. Works top-notch. And you won't find a better price.
What an improvement over the old ones. February 23, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Oh, my! I haven't seen anyone who bought the other (color) Typhoons have the melting problem described by the previous reviewer. I hope it's rare. This is my opinion. I'll let you know if it changes! My husband's favorite is creme brulee so I make it a lot. I have had 2 other torches & have been frustrated (another story). I decided to try a different style. I am VERY happy with this torch. It is very easy to fill & use. There is great control (flame strength) and the best part for me is I can hold it at any angle and it does not fluctuate in flame control or go out altogether when I hold it down. Dont' waste your money on those wands or cheapos out there. This feels good in control & weight. It has a "safety switch" too. Hard for kids to move it. A+
DANGEROUS! March 6, 2007 56 out of 58 found this review helpful
UPDATE: This torch has become unusable and dangerous. It should be recalled. I purchased this torch in Feb. 2007. For the first few months it was working well. I gave the product 4 stars in my review because it worked so well. HOWEVER, the plastic can and does melt. It could possibly get to the point where the butane feed system is compromised and that could be seriously dangerous - fire and/or explosion hazard. I stopped using the torch before it reached that point. I am very disappointed. This torch is a good idea and if the construction were better (much better) it would be a great chef's torch. Unfortunately, this reviewing system will not allow me to change my star-rating of the product. I would have to drop it to zero stars because of the potential danger.
