The cross hatches on the cooling grid protect baked goods from falling through and getting misshapen. What's more, the medium size fits perfectly into my cookie sheet (which serves as a drip pan)so that I can bake meats and allow the fat to drip off. Cleanup is a breeze since the product is dishwasher safe.
