Quality French made Pepper and Salt grinder at an AMAZing price, A+ all the way! October 12, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Peugeot pepper and salt mills have a beautiful gloss finish that is a rich none yellow mustardy color, they call this curry. The color in the picture does not do these mills justice. The mills themselves are about 22 cm tall or 8.75 inches tall the metal knobs are not a significant part of the height, being that they blend in so well with the contours of the mill, but they are part of this measurement. They measure about 19 cm/ 7.5 inches around at the base our 5.5 cm from edge to edge, the diameter. The height and width make these mill perfect as they are not so big as to be a nuisance or so small that you lose them on the table amongst your food, and again the beautiful color and finish makes them wonderful functional accent pieces for a kitchen or dinner table... The grinding mechanism is just like those of the past and made of metal rather than hard plastic. The setting for fine and coarse grinds works true enough with a tight-ing of the knobs giving you a finer grind and loosing coarser larger pieces. I tossed out the salt and peppercorns that came with it, I had no idea what these where stored with our how long they had been with Amazon. When you do fill them please be sure you use rock salt and enough black peppercorns in a pepper mix. The price is a the really deal here one only needs to walk into any fine cookware store to see that each one of these mills sells for $35 to $45 dollars. A great buy that will last for years to come.
These are QUALITY September 16, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I spent way too much time researching salt and pepper mills. After deciding on Peugeot, I shopped Ebay and other discount sites...AMAZON wins, as usual. Save yourself some time and buy Peugeot.
Horrible September 13, 2008 3 out of 22 found this review helpful
The color of these mills are absolutly HORRIBLE. No resonable human would allow these on a dinner table. The color can only be described as Reminiscent of vomit. I have returned them and will try my best to forget that I have ever seen them!!!!!
Still the best mills; still the best finish September 12, 2008 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
The classic curry color is a traditional French kitchen color, applied as a fairly hard lacquer. That makes it easy to live with and very easy to keep clean. The other finishes, esp. the dark stained ones, are comparatively fragile and harder to keep clean, except the black lacquer. The mills in the so-called 'natural finish' have almost no finish at all and tend to pick up any residue around. They are also hard to clean, whereas these Classic Curry lacquered mills wipe clean with a cloth or paper towel.
Peugeot mechanisms are flawless: Just adjust the top nut to loose for coarse or tight for fine and then grind. Silly people pay TWICE as much for Peugeot's U'Select model, on which one twists a lower ring rather than adjust the traditional top nut. Talk about nuts!
These old pattern Peugeot's last for decades of daily use, so they are actually very, very cheap.
Common sea salt or kosher salt works fine in the salt mill.
Any common or fancy pepper works great for the pepper mill.
Keep your eyes open for cheap plastic funnels to aid in filling.
Great Deal August 13, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I purchased these after buying a slightly larger one at a brick and mortar store.
The Salt Mill is not especially remarkable. It works well, but it wasn't really special. It does have great heft to it, just right. The matching set looks wonderful together.
The Pepper Mill is brilliant. It cracks well, and you can easily adjust the coarseness of the grind. It, too, has the perfect weight. Both mills are made of wood, and coated with a durable layer of yellow lacquer.
I would happily buy this set again, it would make a great wedding gift.
