4 out of 5 stars Bosch 1619EVS Plunge Router   December 3, 2007

First, I have to say that this is my first router so I don't have another one to compare it to. I bought it because of the great reviews I found on this site. I still have some experimenting to do but I have used it for routing hinges and strike plates. Initially I am impressed with the power of the tool. I still find the plunging a bit awkward as I am not always sure that I am pushing the router down all the way. With the attachments for dust collecting it makes it very difficult to see the work area. I did find that the dust collection works great! After a few tests using a hinge template I felt that the router was doing an excellent job. I found the weight of the router (13 lbs) to be a bit prohibitive when using the plastic templates I was using to rout the door. The weight was loosening the nails that hold the template in place. I found that the adjusting knob moves a bit when pushing down the lever that locks it in place. Overall it performs very well and it is built well. I don't feel like I am using one of my son's plastic tools. I have other Bosch tools so I can vouch for their effectiveness.

5 out of 5 stars I bought another one   November 26, 2007

Well I've had a Bosch 1619 for many years, and the bit started to wobble a little bit. It's not a problem as long as the bit has a guide bearing, but plow bits vibrate too much for comfort. I decided not to buy another Bosch, because the wobble thing annoyed me.
I looked at all the competitors, including festool. I really was totally prepared to spend the $500 plus the extra collets and accessories. Then I tried the plunge mechanism. It sucks. Bad.
So I moved on to the Porter Cable. Massively heavy, but American quality, right? Made in taiwan. And the shaft wobbles more than my 4 year old Bosch.
I won't bore you with all the models, but in the end, I bought another Bosch. I didn't even know about the spring release after all those years. I guess it does pay to read the manual sometimes. The dust collector attachment is obviously an afterthought, and total junk. Luckily I still have the first one, so they won't get too lonely sitting in a drawer somewhere.
The speed control feature and soft start are also unrivaled. I have found that the router works better and much more quietly(er) if the speed is turned down just a little (one click over 5).
The baseplate can also be adjusted so that it is centered under the bit because the holes are slightly oversized and flat bottomed. This is nice when using the template guides, because the quick release device attaches to the baseplate, so it is easy to adjust.
All in all, I think you've found the best 3+ HP router available.

4 out of 5 stars Full of power & features   November 7, 2007

This is a very powerful router that will handle most any project. I would like to have a light on a router of this class, but I plan to use it as a table router most of the time. I had planned to use this router on my Craftsman router table extension on my table saw, but the mounting holes did not match. I should have checked that out before buying. Now I will need to purchase or make a router table.

3 out of 5 stars Good router if you are into wood working   November 2, 2007

This is a great router if you are really into woodworking, in other words you know what you are doing. It comes in and out of the router tables with ease (takes me from free hand routing to in table ready to go about 30min). Also the speed control is great. However getting bits out of the 1/2 inch collet can be a pain, quit often I need to get out a screw drive to get the collet to release from the router, I know the bit should seat snuggly but this one almost sitts too tight. Would I buy it again, yes its a great versitile router in all kinds of woods, but would I recomend it to someone entry level or using it for home remodeling work no.

1 out of 5 stars Bosch low Quality   June 20, 2007

I started by ordering the Hitachi... it was broken upon arrival, so sent it back. It was inexpensive, so I thought I got what I paid for!
Stepped up tho the Bosch, top quality, or so I thought. Expensive, no accessories included, but that's ok! It had great reviews. After a couple hours of use in 2 months, I have a router with 1/16 inches of shaft end play!!! I'm going to try to get it warrantied... but in the mean time guess I'll order a Dewalt.
