Its a hammer... November 26, 2008 i love this hammer. in this day and age of nail guns i hardly ever use a hammer anyways. i find it easier to carry the lightest hammer possible.
like the other reviewer said the heads were loose on both of mine. but all it takes is a second to drive the pin into the handle from the top of the hammer. mine loosen every once in a while but i use them just about every day.
this is a trim hammer don't try to use it for anything other then trim. i switch to a 24 oz waffle face for framing and a 16oz smooth for decking and other jobs were a waffle may be a problem and this 8 oz is to small.
overall for ~$20 this is a great trim hammer.
great design, inferior execution November 7, 2008 the Dead On eagle series of hammers is based on the old Hart Tool hammers that my colleagues in the production trim business have favored for years.
When Dead-On purchased Hart Tools they began the eagle series. These are great hammers, in all their size variations. they are nicely weighted, and the traditional wood handles are very comfortable. The main reason that finish carpenters prefer these tools is their smoothed and chromed heads. The benefit is simple, fewer mars, dings, and no rust to smear stain grade mouldings.
Unfortunately, Dead-On has made a couple of missteps in their manufacture of these hammers. First, none of the eagle series hammers have rounded over hammer claws. a small thing, sure. but a professional trimmer keeps his hammer on a belt, and the less sharp edges that can catch on adjacent surfaces, the better.
The second problem unique to this hammer ( the 8 oz )is that the head is not securely mounted to the handle. Though possibly a production fluke, I received two hammers from amazon, and both were loose on the handle. Amazon declined to send me a third, though I would be willing to take another chance (I wanted the 8oz for my household toolkit that i keep under the sink).
Too bad - isn't it a shame to be disappointed by a product you love?
