Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars awesome for its purpose   August 16, 2008
The Gerber Recon is great for its purpose- a tactical light that gives just enough light without giving away your position. The dial rotates to give you 4 different colors: red, green, blue, white. I have read many complaints about the brightness of it- well its not designed to be a Surefire. Also, some people complain about it can only stay on or off- no push ability (think Morse Code). It actually does; you just have to turn it almost on and the push the back. I stepped up and got the military version for increased durability. I don't know how much of an improvement this is over the standard, but a few more dollars wouldn't hurt. Finally, the clip is nice to attach to your hat and have a reading light without disturbing tent mates too much.

5 out of 5 stars Great compact close-range flashlight   August 1, 2008
I just got this flashlight in the mail today, and I love it. It's very compact at only 3.75 inches long and approx 1 inch diameter at the bezel. It's short enough that it is just the width of my palm. If I hold it so the bezel is at the edge of my palm, and I grip it using my pinkie, ring, and middle fingers, my thumb and index finger are in perfect position to rotate the tailcap on/off switch - just right, no extra bulk. With the flashlight on, if you rotate the tailcap to just past the off position, you can then turn it on momentarily by pressing on the tailcap with your thumb. I think the size is great - any smaller and it would be difficult to use, any bigger and it would be unnecessary bulk (I intend to attach it to a lanyard to hang around my neck). That said, if you have giant hands you may find this awkwardly small, I usually wear a medium size glove (8.5 inch hands). It feels nice and solid, the finish is great, and I love that it runs on one inexpensive AA battery not those lithium ones. I also appreciate that they gave it a lanyard attachment hole, and a very sturdy (and removable) pocket clip. It's not going to be the light you'll reach for if you're trying to blind everything within a quarter mile and turn night into day, however it seems perfectly adequate for close-range use (ie. less than 10 feet). I am a helicopter pilot, and wanted this light for preflight use and to hang around my neck as a backup light in the cockpit should my headlamp fail. With that purpose in mind I appreciate the flexibility that this flashlight offers with white, red, green and blue light. I use a red head lamp, so by setting this light to its green setting I can use it to better distinguish features on charts that are difficult to see under red light. I'm already wondering if I should have bought a second one... maybe a third...
