Amazon.com Product Description
Schumacher's SEM-1562A low amperage charger is an ideal way to maintain a battery's charge for people who don't use their vehicle everyday, who go short distances, or who do lots of stop-and-go driving. It can also be used to charge small batteries for ATVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, and lawn tractors, or even for batteries that have a long storage time. In cold climates, they're indispensable for keeping batteries warm overnight and ready for starting.

The SEM-1562A charges both 6-volt and 12-volt batteries.
Features
The SEM-1562A maintains both 6-volt and 12-volt batteries, keeping them at full charge using float-mode monitoring. The unit will automatically switch from full-charge to float-mode monitoring when the battery is charged to prevent overcharging. Smart display LEDs indicate whether the unit is in charge, charging, or trouble modes.

Versatile
The SEM-1562A is perfect for charging small batteries, maintaining small and large batteries kept in storage, and batteries for motorcycles, classic cars, TVs, and boats. It's small enough to fit under the hood of your car or truck.

Safe and Effective
The unit has a quick disconnect harness for easy removal. Use the 50 amp clamps to connect to the battery or permanently attach the ring connectors--great for hard to reach motorcycle batteries. It also has a reverse hookup protection in case the clamps are accidentally connected to the wrong terminals.

Warranty
Every Schumacher power source comes with a one-year limited warranty (90 days on battery).

5 out of 5 stars Schumacher SEM-1562A   November 27, 2008
Does exactly what it is supposed to do. Maintains a float charge on a battery, which for batteries that are stored over the winter is perfect so that come spring they are charged without any sulfation.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bargain   November 23, 2008
I purchased this maintainer for my motorcycle to keep the battery up over winter. This does the same thing as "Battery Tender" but costs half the price. I have two other larger Schumacher chargers that I have owned and used for ten years.

5 out of 5 stars Works As Advertised!   October 26, 2008
This is a great little unit... I actually own 4 of them. I use them to maintain the batteries on my two motorcycles, the lawn tractor and my Porsche over the winter. They are connect and forget, which is great. Since they employ "float charging" there's no danger of overcharging a battery which can happen if you leave a regular battery charger connected too long. I wouldn't recommend one of these to bring a fully discharged battery back to life since the charging output is so low, I'd use a regular battery charger instead. But these units are great for their designed purpose and that is to "maintain" a battery during periods of inactivity. I've had no problems with any of my 4 units. By-the-way, you can also use the Deltran cables with this Schumacher unit. Deltran also makes battery tenders and their extension and various connection cables are easier to find.

This charger is really cool. I can plug it and leave it. It monitors the state of the battery and adjusts accordingly. It is really well made! And,despite the fact that Schumacher makes the same unit for Sears, the unit is actually cheaper through Amazon. You also avoid Sears (something I do at all costs!), the shipping is free over $25 and you saved gas!

How can one loose with the reliability of Amazon and Schumacher?

I have a collectors car that the battery kept going low in while its not driven much. On reading and researching trickle chargers, the Schumacher got excellent reviews from several people. I ordered the unit, and when it arrived I found that it had no instructions. Having worked on cars a bit I figured out how to hook the unit up. First thing to mention. There are two different connectors that come with the unit. One is alligator clips as found on jumper cables but a little smaller, used for short term use, and the other are two brass loops used to attach the hook up permenently to the battery posts. The loops holes were so small, they would not fit anything without extensive drilling and enlarging. That took about an hour of my time. The battery we were attempting to truckle charge was holding just enough charge to get a quick ratcheting from the starter, but not enough to turn the crank. So we hooked up the unit and expected to see a yellow light indicating a low charge and that the trickle charger was working. We got a yellow light for all of 30 seconds, then it switched to green. Without instructions, I was not sure if this was correct or not. We left the unit hooked up for 24 hours and decided to see how it worked. Didn't to a thing. The battery was no more charged than when we hooked it up to this unit. I am very dissapointed, and don't think I'd recommend the unit to anyone.
